Rambam: On Being Paid for Torah - Part 1 (Avos 4:7)

This afternoon (10/7/21) we took a brief detour from Hilchos Talmud Torah to read through the Rambam's famous diatribe against "profiting" from Torah, in his commentary to Avos 4:7 (or 4:5, depending on your edition). We began with the Aruch ha'Shulchan's concise summary of the heter that the world relies on, just so we can have a point of contrast, and then we read through the Rambam's lengthy remarks. Our goal was to finish the whole thing today (since aren't scheduled to meet again until Monday), and it got kind of rushed at the end, but we definitely have our work cut out for us. We plan on beginning our next session with the Rambam's codification of his view later on in Hilchos Talmud Torah.
